Good afternoon Colts’ families. We hope that you are enjoying a fantastic long weekend! Buenas tardes, familias de los Colts. ¡Esperamos que estén disfrutando de un fantástico fin de semana largo!

For our new families, this is the Colts’ Community Chronicle. It will be sent to your email at noon on Sundays (or Mondays if there is a long weekend). This has information about everything that is occurring around A.E. Cross School. I strongly recommend that you take a few minutes each week to peruse the message and note anything that is relevant to you and your children. The headings on the first page of the message are highlighted when there is new information for that section to read. If you have any questions about anything that you read in the message, please contact the school.

In this week’s Colts’ Community Chronicle, there is important information about Colts’ Athletics opportunities available to students beginning this week. For students to try out for any athletic team, an Annual Authorization Form must be completed and submitted. You can find that form here:

Annual Authorization to Try Out for Athletic Teams

Below are pieces of a message that was sent on Monday, August 25, welcoming everyone to the 2025-2026  school year:

First Day of Classes

The first day of classes for all students will be Tuesday, September 2nd. Beginning at 9:15 AM (school doors will be opened at 9:05 AM), students from all grades will meet their homeroom teachers in the following locations:

  • Grade 7 Students – Will enter through the Main Entrance and meet in the Main Gym
  • Grade 8 Students – Will enter through SE Entrance and meet in the Cafeteria/Courtyard
  • Grade 9 Students – Will enter through Back Entrance and meet in the West Gym

Students will be able to determine their homerooms and their classes through MyCBE/PowerSchool beginning Tuesday, September 2. Additionally, there will be lists of homerooms posted just inside each of the entrances on Tuesday, September 2.

The first day of classes will include a combination of homeroom activities to build a sense of community within the students as well as a brief introduction to their core subject areas as well as Physical Education. Students are asked to bring a water bottle, snack, and lunch with them to school on the first day of school unless they walk home for lunch.

Students who are not going home for lunch will remain on campus and eat lunch between 12:10-12:30 pm and then go outside from 12:30-12:50 pm. Tuesday, September 2nd is a full day of school for ALL students with classes ending at 3:50 pm.

On the A.E. Cross School website, there is a list of school supplies. As noted on the website, the list is only a guideline and more specific information about what supplies are needed will be shared with students and families on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Additionally, students will be provided with a lock and locker during their homeroom activities on the first day of school.

Student Timetables

All CBE 2025-26 student scheduling information will be visible in the MyCBE public portal webpage, or the PowerSchool mobile app, on the first day of school. We understand that families may have preferences regarding student timetables. Please know that our class placements were created with thoughtful planning to best meet the academic and well-being needs of all students. Student course request forms were utilised in the Spring to ensure that students received the majority, if not all, of their preferred Complementary courses. When planning for Complementary courses, we also take into consideration staffing, classroom availability, maintenance of manageable class sizes and the school-wide master schedule. Due to the complexity of this process, and the need to maintain balance across all classes, we are unable to accommodate individual timetable change requests. We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we work to provide a structured and equitable learning environment for every student. Should you have any concerns, please be in touch with the teacher to discuss how they can support the learning needs of your child in the classroom.

Student Transportation

Calgary Transit provides an express bus service for students living in Signal Hill (Calgary Transit Route 789). To see the Calgary Transit route and schedule from Signal Hill, we encourage you to visit the folllowing website:

Additionally, regular Calgary Transit bus routes #9, #22, and Max Teal have stops in the immediate vicinity of A.E. Cross School.

Here is what was communicated from the Calgary Board of Education on Friday, August 29 in reference to possible labour action:

  • We look forward to welcoming your child to school on Tuesday, Sept 2. There has been a tremendous amount of news coverage regarding potential labour action by the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA). We recognize this has created uncertainty for families. At this time, CBE schools are prepared to begin the school year as usual. Before any labour action can occur, the ATA must provide school boards with 72 hours’ notice. If strike notice is issued, we are committed to sharing information with you as soon as possible. You can also find the most up-to-date information on the CBE’s labour action web page. We look forward to an incredible year of learning!

We are really excited to have our students back at school tomorrow morning. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school. Take care. Estamos muy emocionados de tener a nuestros estudiantes de vuelta en la escuela mañana por la mañana. Si tienen alguna pregunta, no duden en contactar con la escuela. Cuídense.
