Good afternoon A.E. Cross families! I hope that your weekend is going well and that you have remembered to turn your clocks forward one hour to welcome back Daylight Saving Time! ¡Buenas tardes, familias de A.E. Cross! Espero que su fin de semana esté yendo bien y que hayan recordado adelantar sus relojes una hora para darle la bienvenida al horario de verano.

Below you will find the most recent edition of the Colts’ Community Chronicle.

There are a few important items that I would like to bring to your attention this week:

Parent-Teacher Conferences (March 20 and March 21)

Parents/Guardians will be able to book conferences beginning on Thursday March 13, at 4:00PM. The conference bookings tool will register you to meet with 1 teacher at a time. This means that you will have to make multiple bookings if you desire to meet with more than 1 of your child's teachers, or to talk about different courses.  We value the role that your child plays in their learning, and strongly encourage all students to attend conferences with their parent/guardian.

Format:

  • Thursday March 20, 5:30-8:00PM
  • Friday March 21, 9:00AM-2:00PM
  • All conferences will be online via Microsoft Teams and a link will be emailed directly to you after you book a time slot. Each conference meeting will be 10 minutes in length.

Parent Surveys

There are currently two surveys that we would like parents to complete to provide administration with information about their child’s learning at A.E. Cross School.

Alberta Education Assurance Survey (Grade 7 Parents only) – you would have been emailed a survey link and random access code in late February for you to access

School Planning and Engagement Survey (All Parents) - At. A. E. Cross School, we believe that community voices are an important contribution to student success. We are asking families to participate in a short survey to gather feedback from families for the purposes of school planning. The survey will available online from Mon Feb 24 - Sat March 22. We are looking for your ideas and reflections about the School Development Plan, the school budget, and school fees. Thank you for your time and consideration. Access survey

Student Social Media Presence

At A.E. Cross School, we talk to students about Digital Citizenship and appropriate ways to interact with their peers online. Over the past few weeks, we have become aware of certain accounts on SnapChat and TikTok in which proper digital citizenship is not being displayed. Unfortunately, anonymous accounts on these sites have been started resulting in inappropriate messaging towards members of our school community. We have enlisted support from the Calgary Police Service in an effort to determine the owners of these accounts and will continue to work to have these accounts disabled and provide progressive discipline to students who are responsible for negative messaging online.

Please have a conversation with your child about their social media usage. Do you know what apps they are posting messages to when they are online? Do you know who your child is interacting with when they are online? Is your child exhibiting positive communication and digital citizenship traits when they are online? Remember that children under 13 years of age are prohibited from having an account on SnapChat or TikTok.

Thank you for your assistance with this.

Human Sexuality Unit

A reminder that Human Sexuality begins in Physical Education classes on Monday, March 10. If you do not want your child participating in the Human Sexuality unit, please complete the form attached to this message and return it to your child’s Physical Education teacher.

Thank you for trusting our staff to teach your children each and every day. We hope that you have a wonderful week! Gracias por confiar en nuestro personal para enseñar a sus hijos todos los días. ¡Esperamos que tengan una semana maravillosa!

Athletics

We will be following the CBE regulations to accommodate the CUPE strike.

  • Attendance at athletic games will be limited to parents/guardians of those athletes directly involved in the event. Students will not be permitted to attend athletic games unless they are the siblings of one of the athletes and are accompanied by a parent/guardian. Access will be limited to the gymnasium; no access will be permitted to other parts of the school.

Student Surveys

In Math and Science classes over the next couple of weeks, students will have the opportunity to complete surveys to give administration a better understanding of things that are working well at A.E. Cross and areas that could be improved.

Grade 7 students will complete the Alberta Assurance Survey and Grade 8 and 9 students will complete the CBE Student Survey.

We look forward to gathering student voice so that we can continue to improve student learning experiences at A.E. Cross School.

Parent Surveys

As part of the ongoing commitment to providing a world-class education for Alberta’s children, Alberta Education will again be conducting their annual survey of grades 4, 7 and 10 students and their parents or guardians. The completion of the survey is voluntary and anonymous, as is completion of each question within the survey. The survey will gather important information about students’ and parents’ school experiences and will help to inform continuous improvement in our education system. The survey will also be sent to all teachers in the province. In some schools, all students in grades 4 and above – and their parents or guardians – will be surveyed.

To fill out the survey, please click on the survey link and enter the code below to begin the survey. If you have more than one student in grades 4, 7, and 10, you will need to do the survey for each child. In this case, you will receive a separate email with a different code for each child, be sure to check your junk or spam folder for separate emails. Please know that only one Random Access Code(RAC) is provided per child for parents and only one parent response can be submitted as RACs are single use.

Your RAC would have been emailed to you in late February from the Calgary Board of Education. Survey Webpage: https://public.education.alberta.ca/APOS/
